Defending McRae Motorsport Rallysprint Series champion Mark Greenham will be using this season, which starts at Perth Motorplex in Kwinana on November 7, to tune up his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII for his first crack at Targa events. After a successful career in local motorsport events, he was the State Circuit Street Car champion in 2011, Greenham decided to compete in Rallysprints because he could share the experience with a co-driver. In his first season he finished third, just one point behind the joint leaders, and he improved to finish at the top of the leaderboard at the end of last season. While his success in this format has encouraged him to make a bigger committment to test himself in Targa SouthWest and Targa West he says he will continue to compete in the Rallysprint Series. "The Rallysprints is a great way of competing without having to make a big committment, either financially or in time. It is also a great social event." Greenham said. "As long as your car is road safe you can turn up on a Thursday and compete. "I got involved because I wanted to share the experience with my father who was always my number one pit man. "Sadly, he died from cancer early this year, during the last season, but it is still a family event. This season, my sister, Sarah, is going to be in the passenger seat." The Rallysprint Series is a tarmac rally contested over five rounds between November and March. To enter, all you need is a road registered car that meets all the required safety standards in regards to brakes, tyres and seat belts. The only additional equipment required is helmets for the driver and co-driver and a fire extinguisher. One day licences are available and multiple co-drivers can be nominated enabling the driver to share the experience with family or friends. |
